Technical Education in Haryana

At the time of inception of Haryana state in 1966, there were only 6 polytechnic institutes, out of which 4 were government and 2 were government - aided private institutes. At that time an engineering college in the state was run in Kurukshetra, which is currently known as National Institute of Technology.

The major technical universities in the state are as follows:

  • National Institute of Technology .National Institute of Technology (NIT)is located in Kurukshetra district of Haryana state.
  • It was established in the year 1963 with its name Regional Engineering College, REC through a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Punjab.
  • On 26th June, 2002, its name was changed to National Institute of Technology and was also given the status of deemed university
  • It offers four years B.Tech course along with other programmes such as M. Tech, Ph.D, MBA and so on.
  • Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology

  • This university was established in the year 1987 as an engineering college at Murthal (Sonipat), Haryana. Initially, its name was Chhotu Ram Government College of Engineering.
  • This institution started with mechanical engineering and electronics and Communications. It was the first government engineering college established in the state.
  • On 6th June, 2006 the Haryana Government converted it into a university in November, 006 under Act-29 of the Legislature of the State of Haryana.
  • Its name was also changed to Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology.
  • This university was awarded the Improvement Programme for quality of technical education.
  • The Central Institute of Plastics and technology was established in the year 201 under this university.
  • The university is spread over 10 acres of land.
